Commuting with the Gjøvik Line

The Gjøvik Line (Gjøvikbanen) is a popular Oslo commuter line. Free from highway congestion, the train gets you rapidly to and from Oslo. Key commuter stations are Grefsen, Nydalen, and Kjelsås. R-trains also call at Oslo’s Tøyen station. The Oslo S–Nittedal ride takes about 30 minutes. All trains have WiFi and power outlets and offer seat reservations.

Bring your bike – or skis – to Nordmarka

The Gjøvik Line is also a good choice for exploring Nordmarka, Oslo’s protected, northern woodlands — by foot, bicycle, or on skis. Bike transport must be booked in advance. In winter, Gjøvikbanen brings you right to Nordmarka’s network of ski trails. Trains also stop at the foot of the ski lift at Varingskollen alpine center, just 40 minutes from Oslo.

Care to bring along your bike — or skis — to experience Nordmarka Gjøvikbanen is the way to go. For example, detrain at Movatn, Hakadal, Harestua, or Grua stations to get to know Nordmarka, enjoy serene landscapes and return home via a station that suits your trip. Consider stopping at trail-side Kikutstua cabin for waffles. Or pause to swim in one of the beautiful lakes along a bike trail. A popular Oslo hike starts at Kjelsås station and follows the course of the Aker river to the center of Oslo.
