How do I purchase a ticket and how do I pay?

Via the journey planner at vy.no you can purchase most categories of tickets, except season tickets.

Ticket machines
Using our ticket machines, you can purchase most types of train tickets and retrieve your pre-ordered tickets. You cannot retrieve tickets purchased in the Vy app at a ticket machine.
Ticket machines located outdoors do not accept bills; only coins and bank cards can be used.

Staffed train stations
If there is a ticket counter located at your station, you can purchase or pick up your train tickets there.

On board the train
A NOK 40 ticket surcharge must be paid when you purchase your ticket on the train, if you boarded at a station that has a ticket machine. You may pay in cash (Norwegian currency only) or use a credit/debit card. The surcharge applies to each passenger’s ticket, with a few exceptions that are stated below.
You must pay the surcharge even if you were unable to purchase your ticket before boarding due to a full train or long lines at ticket machines or ticket counters. The onboard-purchase surcharge applies to all ticket types and customer categories, with some exceptions.
The surcharge does not apply to:
- Senior citizens, blind passengers, travelers with impaired vision, or other disabilities that render them unable to use the ticket machines
- Children travelling in the company of someone paying the senior citizen fare
- Travellers departing from a station without a ticket machine
- Dog tickets
- Bicycle tickets
- The supplementary services seat reservation on regional trains in Eastern Norway, as well as Plus and Sleeper on the Bergen Line.
Please note: You cannot buy tickets in carriages marked ‘Ubetjent’ [unmanned] or ‘Kun gyldig billett’ [valid tickets only], and you cannot buy season tickets on board.
