3 reasons to experience the Flåm Railway

Norwegian nature at its best
It’s no surprise that people travel from all over the world to experience the Flåm Railway. For Norwegian travel enthusiasts, this is a train dream come true. Here you will experience the unspoilt Norwegian nature, with waterfalls and steep mountains on both sides. The train stops for five minutes at Kjosfossen, allowing you to disembark and marvel at the sight of water in a 93-metre freefall.

Historical whispers

3 tips for speed and action
The Flåm zipline
Norway’s longest zipline, measuring 1,381 metres, can be found in Flåm and it’s an incredible experience! Leave the Flåm Railway at Vatnahalsen station and fly down to Kårdal. From here, you can rent a bike and cycle back to Flåm.
Fjord safaris with RIB
Rallarvegen
Rallarvegen is the most popular bike ride in the Norwegian mountains. You can take the Bergen Line to Finse, for example, and spend a whole day (or two) riding from there to Flåm. Or how about going for a less demanding option by combining the Flåm Railway, hiking and cycling from Kårdal?
3 hikes you will love
Brekkefossen
‘Wow! What a view!’ In order to get up to Brekkefossen, you can easily stroll from the centre of Flåm along Brekkeveien until you see the Norwegian Trekking Association’s marked hiking trail. You can follow the stone steps all the way up to the waterfall and lookout point.
Hike down Myrdalsberget and cycle to Flåm
You can hop off the Flåm Railway at Vatnahalsen station and walk down to Kårdal. This is a pleasant spot to break for lunch and you can rent a bike for the final and easiest part of Rallarvegen to Flåm.
Stegastein
This unique lookout is guaranteed to give you butterflies as you survey the spectacular views across Aurlandsfjord. Stegastein is a short drive from the centre of Flåm.
3 overnattingssteder
Svingen Guesthouse
Oh, it’s just like being welcomed by your grandmother! Just a short walk along the quay from the train station, you will find an authentic, cosy guesthouse with a little extra. The floral wallpaper, the smell of soap and the old but well-preserved furniture. Here you will find spacious living rooms with large windows opening out onto the fjords and perhaps the cosiest fjord porch in all of Flåm?
Fretheim hotel
Just a stone’s throw from the train station, you will find a beautiful hotel with a historic feel. Guests have been staying at the Fretheim hotel since the 19th century. The rooms are cosy and inviting with views across Flåm.
Flåmsbrygga hotel
Only 100 metres from the railway, in the middle of the quay, you will find the Flåmsbrygga hotel. All rooms have balconies overlooking the fjord and provide tonnes of charm with their rustic style.

3 experiences for calm and well-being
Fjord Sauna
Treat yourself and book your place at a Fjord Sauna. There are few things that can beat a refreshing swim in the fjord and complete relaxation in a steamy sauna as you enjoy the views of the fjord. An added bonus is that the sauna is equipped with a floor hatch to make it easier to get into the fjord for a swim and there’s even a diving tower on the roof.
SUP
Ah, paddling in the fjords – surrounded by high mountains on all sides – is quite the unique experience. You will find tranquility when paddling to the sound of the waterfalls, birdsong and cows in their pastures.
Flåm Fjord Farm
This year’s latest addition in Flåm is the newly restored adventure farm, which focuses on local flavours. Here you can enjoy outdoor refreshments in the beautiful gardens, surrounded by apple trees, flowers, goats and miniature pigs. Norwegian folk musicians bring the entertainment and everything will be ready to welcome guests from May!
3 places to eat great food

Ægir at Flåmsbrygga
In the middle of the quay, you will find what looks like a stave church. But don’t be fooled by appearances. Upon entering, it’s like wandering into a Viking-era feast hall. I was fascinated by the dragon heads, the references from Norse mythology and, not least, the signature dish: the Ægir Vikingplanke.

Flåm bakery
The freshly baked goods from the local bakery on the quay are also worth a visit. The bakery is also a lovely spot for enjoying a simple meal, such as a pizza.

Flåm Marina Terrasse
This is another restaurant on the quay that I enjoyed and it is situated just a few minutes’ walk from the train station. Here you can enjoy a beautiful fish soup while taking in the magnificent views across the fjord – whether you’ve chosen to sit inside or outside. Bonus: Very friendly staff.
