Punctuality

How punctual are our trains and buses? Here you can read about the reasons for delays and how we are working to improve punctuality.

How punctual are our trains?

85.8 per cent of our trains were on time in 2023.

How punctual are our buses?

92.8 per cent of our buses were on time in 2023.

The trains

A train is considered on time if it arrives at the end station within 3:59 minutes of the specified time. For long-distance trains, the margin is 5:59 minutes.

Bane NOR owns the infrastructure, and together we do everything we can to ensure our trains arrive precisely on time.

There are many reasons why a train may be delayed, but the main causes can be divided into three groups:

  • Track and signalling faults
  • Spending too long at stations
  • Technical faults with the trains

Track and signalling faults

Bane NOR is responsible for the infrastructure and its maintenance. Track and signalling faults are the main cause of delays. A signalling fault does not mean that there is an error in the signalling system, but that the system is reporting a fault. For example, this could be a short circuit, or ice and stones in points. The weather, wind and other unforeseen events can also cause problems for train traffic.

Bane NOR spends every day improving tracks and signalling systems so that the delays are as few and as short as possible.

Spending too long at stations

These are some of the most common reasons why trains spend longer at stations than planned:

  • Narrow doors and steps that make it harder to disembark and board
  • Special luggage, prams and similar items that take longer to get on board
  • Passengers trying to board trains before everyone has disembarked

These types of delays have fallen dramatically in the last few years. This is primarily due to the new Flirt trains, which make boarding and disembarking easier.

In addition to this, all conductors and train drivers have received training in how to ensure stops are as smooth and efficient as possible.

Technical faults with the trains

Technical faults on trains and rolling stock also cause delays and cancellations. Trains in Norway are subjected to extreme stresses. From steep and winding tracks to ice, moisture and large temperature fluctuations. These cause wear on the trains, especially our oldest train sets.

The buses

We will always do our best to make sure you arrive at the right time. Nevertheless, should delays or other failures in delivery still occur, we will:

  • provide the best possible information about the situation;
  • provide information about alternative means of transport/routes as soon as possible; and
  • arrange alternative transport wherever practically possible.
